Dubs vs Subs Empty Dubs vs Subs

Post by RApollos Thu Apr 18, 2013 8:22 am

Honestly, there's never gonna be a conclusion to this debate. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's interesting to know which do people prefer between the Dubs and the Subs of anime series.

For me it's really a split. I don't really mind subs, though I don't usually watch them for the simple fact that I don't watch to read, I watch to enjoy the show, that's why I always tend to lean towards watching dubs more often. That in no way means dubs are better, half the time the dubs tend to be crap, more so when a certain company *coughs* 4kids *coughs* tries to make a show kid friendly in the dub only to utterly annihilate said series and make it completely unbearable to watch at times(i.e. 4kids' dub of One Piece). Though I do commend 4kids for how they do the dubs for Yu-Gi-Oh! as they haven't gone to embarrassing lengths to make the show, at least in their incompetent minds, acceptable for airing in the US.

I kinda got off topic towards the end there, but I hope you get some of the point I'm attempting to explain of my opinion.

Dubs vs Subs Empty Re: Dubs vs Subs

Post by Guest Thu Apr 18, 2013 8:36 am

For me I'll prefer subs because I really love the original voices of the anime characters and also its enjoyable to watch but sometimes I also prefer the dubbed one. For example, The Dragonball. Goku's original voice (Japanese) sounds really gay and it feels like I want to punch my laptop because I can't take his voice anymore! While the english dubbed version of his voice sounds really badass.. So it really depends on how they work out with their voices.

I prefer original voices because you can really feel their feelings, .piss the excitement and etc. Therefore subs is better.. But I'm not saying dubs are bad.. Everyone has their own taste .dunno

Sometimes I feel as if dubs do get a bad rap, but there are certain animes where the dub is actually considered as good, if not better, than the original. A good example of one would be Spice and Wolf, as the dub, from what I've seen, gets a good amount of praise from many people and I've even enjoyed the dub(even though there's ton of conversations in it about the topic no one likes, economics).

I honestly prefer subs to dubs, it's just the feel of it changes too much when you dub it.

I re-recorded a lot of studio ghibli films of the tv as someone decided to reformat the drive they where saved to the first time and I was sad to see that they had been dubbed this time instead of subbed, I found it impossible to watch my neighbour totoro once dubbed, a film I'd watched a million times before with subs.

I don't really have a preference. I like both :) Most of the time I will default to the dubs if the whole series has been dubbed or there is a decent amount of it dubbed, just because it's easier to watch stuff in my own language, I don't have to concentrate as much. I probably watch equal amounts of subs and dubs :)

Definitely subs. There are some anime like Pokemon and yugioh as a kid I always watched in english on tv, so I'd prefer in english, but besides that I like everything in japanese, dubs seem too cheesy in my opinion. Plus, I love japanese!! .fly

Dubs vs Subs Empty Re: Dubs vs Subs

Post by StraightEdge Rurouni Sat May 18, 2013 8:18 pm

Depends on the anime for me really, I grew up on Dubs when I was a lot younger, and I had no access to subs at the time either. So for anime like DBZ, Rurouni Kenshin, FMA, Trigun, and so on, it's just weird hearing the Japanese instead of the English.

But then I watch some dubs from these days, and I just want to tear my ears off. When I was getting ready to watch Angel Beats, I saw they had it on Netflix, and I was like, CONVENIENCE! Then I found out it was the dub and the dub alone and I wanted to kill myself within a few moments.

So for me it really depends, though I don't think the Baccano! dub is all that bad like it could have been.
